this past weekend i flew down to salt lake to spend time with my dear friends Erik and cinead kubiak. i grew up climbing with erik when he was in college and i was still in high school. years later, erik now lives in salt lake with cinead and they get to crush routes all the time.
Erik is pretty much my inspiration for oldguy.com. he embodies what it means to be oldguy.com. Erik put up most of the hard lines out at little si back in the 90s and continues to put up and climb at the mid 5.14 level. now he spends much of their free time bolting new lines at their area they have been developing over the past couple years. it is a pretty amazing place. i will let the video do the talking.
i flew in thursday morning and erik picked me up for a couple days of cave craggin. the first day went great. i felt really strong and psyched. i was able to flash 13a and all the 12s i got on. then i wanted to get on a couple projz and start something. got on this amazing 8a+/8b and then another 8b/8b+. they were both some of the best lines i have ever been on. that was day one. after day one i felt like i had been punched in the gut, a lot. we camped out there that night to get an early start the next day. i was pretty worked so we went up and bolted this new line. erik thinks its going to be good but i think it looks like mank. then we tried to climb. i was way worked from the day before. when you are working mon-fri and climbing one day on the weekend it is hard to get up for two brutal days outside. i am hoping to change this so i can be more productive. we drove back to salt lake friday night in prep for saturdays sounders gave vs. Real salt lake.
great game, fun times with the ECS away crew and a 2-2 tie, damn.
sunday we woke up and headed back out to the crag. i was worked, but managed to climb a bunch of pitches. didnt really do very well on my proj, but im confident that i should be able to do it with some more training and a trip back down.
i love going down there. it really is a great place. climbing is every where, but most importantly, i have someone who is super psyched to train and climb, and push me to my limits. Erik never lets me quit and never takes it easy. i need his push to make me better.i will post some video now and then over the next couple days. it will include climbing and sounders.
