i like eating

great article from the straight dope on diet and climbing.
i was taught at an early age that it is a lot easier to get light than get strong.
being older i still believe that to some degree, but obviously ive learned to do it right. for example, donuts from mighty O and voodoo are essential to maintaining stremphf. but a few days of strictly fruits and vegetables and proteins is ok too.
steve edwards breaks it down in proper fashion without hitting the danger levels.

patrick vs. wolfgang

back in '89. i was so psyched on patrick edlinger. i had those shoes (actually still do), i tried to emulate his smooth fluid technique. this video brings back memories. i love that i can find this so easily. back then getting this type of footage or information was very difficult if not impossible if you lived in the US.
allez patrick!
technique will always prevail, on ropes anyway.
french finesse vs. german power

wolfgang

tribute to wolfgang

strempfffff!!!!!

ross reminded me about this video.
ben moon and the S7 boys have been killing hard training for decades. not many people can match what they were doing. but i guess the question is, does it translate? i mean they kill problems no question, but we have all seen different styles and techniques get farther. are those who are at the top right now that much more naturally gifted. i think so. there are not many folks at the top who train like this. either way. get psyched.

Drive Axle vs. swaybar

Edition38X - 10th Anniversary from Stephen Brooks on Vimeo.

weve been spending quite a bit of time in our shop lately.
got my coilovers on the other week and threw my wheels and spacers on the other day. then i made some adjustments to lower the GTI even farther. after a few miles of henious grinding and rubbing i realized there was a problem. got back in the shop and pulled it apart and saw a pretty bad grind ring around my drive axle. turns out the "axle vs. swaybar" fight was easily won by the swaybar. so i raised it back up a bit and it seems to be fine.

GO SEAHAWKS!!!!!!

the boys are cheering for you.

its that time of year again.....

well, its time to start training again. after a short summer of not really climbing at all (long story, ask me some time), i am ready to start killing routes again. but first, training, then projz, then more training. patxi always gets me psyched.
i have also been introduced to steve edwards's blog
this is what i have been looking for (without looking too hard). plus there are bonus photos from the day. the funny part is, many of the climbing photos from the day that are on his blog, i remember not only the climber but the caption and location before i even read it. just reminds me of how many time i used to read and re read climbing magazine and rock and ice and even
lets get to it.

the boys are together at last.

just finished all three last night with trevor. dino turned out the best. looks great. he is happy.

huskies get destroyed but sounders kill columbus.

after doing the rules meeting in tacoma i rushed north to get to the dawgs game with my wife. i made it about 5 minutes into the game. we looked like they may have held it respectable in the first half, but by the end there was no hope. so we headed home to watch the sounders crush columbus 4-0. nkufo had a hat trick. wonderful play all throughout. highlight of my day though was this guy sittig in front of us. he literally had overalls and a red straw hat on. straight from nebraska. i actually saw a ton of guys wearing overalls who were nebraska fans. it was great.

we finished up setting.....

....for the event. we got 61 problems, set, tested, tweaked and done by 2pm today. points and wrap up by 4pm. dialed is the word i use for this type of efficiency.
super big thanks to Ross Halverson. this is the third event i have had him on my crew and he is really top notch. wonderful to work with and his prolems are great.
Adam Brossard, my right hand. great job this week. as always he holds me in check and crosses my Ts. great routes and he will be running the event tomorrow.
brian doyle and jason mikos, old skool flavor. they have some great problems up. i felt like i was in a time warp climbing jasons prolems. he taught me much of what i know.
bret showed up yesterday and pulled out a few. as usual they are good. he is on his way to set for the noreaster this following week, so he didnt have a bunch of time to spend with us this week.
tomorrows event is a 5 hour climb time, so be prepared for a bunch of resting, long lines, crowds and super classic prolems.
i will be at the Husky vs. Nebraska game but i will be giving the rules meeting.
GO Dawgs, Go Team VW.

tacoma comp this weekend

drove down to tacoma today to set for or first comp down at the newest vertical world gym. brian had the place dialed in for an easy day. me, ross, adam, and brian all set ten each and bret and the world famous jason mikos set a handful each. we are planning about 70 total so tomorrow will be an easy day. once again i am super thankful to have a really dialed in crew who works quickly and sets efficiently. makes our job so much easier.

Alex places 17th at youth world championships

with a good run, alex placed 17th overall this morning in the semi final round of youth worlds. a very respectable and top notch finish for any young climber from any where. at this event, they only take 8 to finals, which is very hard to do. i hope everyone understands the level of the competition at this stage. pretty much every boy in that category climbs 5.14. the europeans are beast. and they do not let up. alex should be proud. i know i am.
he took this more seriously than most people on US team. Kynan called me and told me he climbed with the type of heart he is looking for in US team members. he even mentioned alex's drive in one of the team meetings. i have seen so many kids and their families feel that youth world championships is a vacation. it is not. if you are going to go, you better work your ass off to make your country and your climbing team proud. otherwise you should give up your spot to someone who will train and train and train.
alex did this. he worked hard and his result proved it. everything he did this summer lead toward this event. i am proud of him and i know his team is too.

bhops made semis in ecuador 2007

this just in, bhops made semis at the youth world championships in ecuador 2007.
how i forgot this i have no idea. way to go bhops.
how much do you weigh right now??

Alex fritz into semis at youth worlds

our very own Alex Fritz made it into the semi final round of the IFSC youth world championships.
very proud of our boy. i believe he is the first of our boys to make it out of the qualifying rounds at the world championships (edit, bhops just reminded me that he made semis in ecuador). nice job buddy, good luck tomorrow.
overall the US team has had 16 out of 26 make it through to semis. pretty good, but not our best year. a few years ago we had something like 24 out of 26. but of course that is when i was on the coaching staff ;)
from all of us at the VW climbing team, we love you alex, and of course,
BOO Fritz!!!!!
GO USA!!!!!

my kids cant see.......whaaa, whaaa, whaaaa

weve been hearing this since the opening game. in Qwest field you stand and support your sounders in most sections. if you want to sit, which is more than reasonable, buy tickets up in the club section. this family is really teaching their kids how to support their boys. great idea.

sounders tie salt lake

our guy josh who sits in front of us at sounders games hates nate jaqua. he really doesnt think he is any good (i on the other hand think he's great). all josh does is talk garbage about jaqua when he is in the game.
at half time tonight, kevin, our other buddy who sits in front of us, went down to the pro shop and got josh a present.
GO JAQUA!!!!! GO SOUNDERS!!!!!!

rhode island

here are some shots from my trip to rhode island. my wife is from a place called hope valley which is pretty much 15 minutes from Narragansett and 30 minutes from providence. about an hour from newport. we had a wonderful time. it was very relaxing. a perfect end to an all but perfect summer for me. we spent time sitting on the porch, going to the beach (which was an exact replica of what you would see at the jersey shore), smoozing with the yacht crowd in newport. we went to the aquarium, and the sounders vs. new england game. i really cant explain how much fun i had in a very short time. i wish we could have spent another few days for sure.
